As a native of Kansas City, Kansas, Gerald Rushfelt attended its public schools and graduated in 1947 from Wyandotte High School. He attended Graceland College and the University of Kansas, from which he received his undergraduate and law degrees. From 1953 through 1955, he served with the U.S. Army in Germany. He engaged in the general practice of law with the firm of Sullivant & Smith and its successor firms in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties from 1958 to 1985. He was senior partner from 1977 until his appointment as U. S. Magistrate Judge in 1985. Judge Rushfelt has served as president of the Johnson County Bar Association and of the Earl E. O’Connor American Inn of Court. He has also served as critique instructor in trial practice at the University of Kansas School of Law and as faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and the Institutes of the Kansas Bar Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the American Bar Foundation.
