Rachel E. Schwartz Selected as the Next United States Magistrate Judge in District of Kansas

The United States District Court for the District of Kansas announces the selection of Rachel E. Schwartz as the next United States Magistrate Judge in Topeka, Kansas. Ms. Schwartz was born in a Chicago suburb but grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Economics, and American Studies from the University of Kansas, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. In 2001, she earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.

Following graduation, Ms. Schwartz joined a large law firm in Dallas, Texas. In 2004, Ms. Schwartz returned to Kansas and joined the law firm Stueve Siegel Hanson LLP in Kansas City, Missouri, where she became a partner in 2008. In her practice, Ms. Schwartz focused on complex litigation and was appointed by federal courts as Co-Lead Counsel in two separate multidistrict litigation actions.

Throughout her career, Ms. Schwartz has been active in the community. She has held multiple leadership roles in the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA), including recently serving on the Board of Directors and as the President of the Federal Courts Advocates Section. She has served on the District’s Bench-Bar Committee, the District’s 2013 Merit Selection Panel, and the 2019 Merit Selection Panel for the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

Ms. Schwartz will be sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge upon the completion of an FBI background check.

Ms. Schwartz will succeed Magistrate Judge James P. O’Hara, who retired as of November 30, 2021. Judge O’Hara remains on recall status in the Kansas City division. Additionally, Magistrate Judge Angel D. Mitchell is moving from the Topeka to Kansas City division.
