The Honorable Gwynne E. Birzer was recently reappointed and sworn-in as a United States Magistrate Judge for a second, eight-year term. Judge Birzer was originally appointed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas bench on July 1, 2015. Prior to her reappointment, a public notice was issued announcing the process and seeking comments from the bar and the public.
A Merit Selection Panel, consisting of members of the bar and the public, completed an evaluation of Judge Birzer’s performance and attributes, such as, good character, judgment, legal ability, temperament, and a commitment to equal justice under the law. After considering the Merit Selection Panel’s report and recommendation, the District Judges unanimously voted to reappoint Judge Birzer.
Judge Birzer is an active member of the Wichita Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association, and a member of the ABA Fellows. She is also active in the Wesley E. Brown Inn of Court and the Federal Bar Association. Judge Birzer serves as the Tenth Circuit Representative for the Federal Magistrate Judges Association. During her tenure as Magistrate Judge, she has been very active by serving on court governance committees, community outreach and board service, she regularly visits local school classrooms, providing opportunities for young people to learn about our judicial system, and she has taken a lead role in organizing the District of Kansas Constitution Day events.
