Years of Service: 2026 - Present

Tony Mattivi was nominated by President Trump to serve as United States District Judge for the District of Kansas. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 9, 2026.

Prior to his nomination to the federal bench, Judge Mattivi served as the 13^th Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, filling that role from 2023 until the time of his appointment to the bench. Before leading the KBI, Judge Mattivi served as a federal prosecutor in the District of Kansas for more than twenty years, where his practice focused on drug trafficking, violent crime, organized crime, money laundering, and terrorism. He served as the District’s Antiterrorism and National Security Coordinator, and he prosecuted a number of high-profile domestic and international terrorism cases in Kansas between 2013 and 2020.  From 2009 to 2013 he was the lead prosecutor in the capital military commission at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, against the al Qaeda operative who masterminded the bombing of the USS Cole and the murder of 17 American sailors. For his work on this case, he was awarded the Department of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service.  In 2007, he served with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Regime Crimes Liaison Office in Iraq, assisting the Iraqi High Tribunal with the prosecution of members of Saddam Hussein’s regime for war crimes.  Early in his legal career, Judge Mattivi served as an Assistant District Attorney in Shawnee County, Kansas, and as an Assistant Kansas Attorney General. 

Judge Mattivi is a graduate of Metropolitan State College of Denver, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1990, and Washburn University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1994.
